On
Wednesday 15 February, the European Court of Auditors (ECA) will publish a special report on the EU's Global Climate Change Alliance.
ABOUT THE TOPIC
Developing countries contribute the least to global greenhouse gas emissions, but they are the ones most affected by the consequences of climate change. In 2007, the EU launched the Global Climate Change Alliance to support those countries, fostering knowledge-sharing and providing technical and financial support for adaptation, mitigation and disaster risk-reduction measures. The initiative supported climate change actions in a wide range of countries, in Asia, Africa and in the Caribbean and Pacific regions. Between 2007 and 2020, the EU provided total funding of €729 million.
ABOUT THE AUDIT
The auditors examined how the Global Climate Change Alliance was managed and whether EU funds were used efficiently and effectively. As the Global Climate Change Alliance will not be continued, the auditors will make recommendations for improvements for future EU actions in the area of climate change and for future global development initiatives.
